Employer of Choice -- A Winning Strategy
Attracting and Retaining High-Performance Employees
One of the most effective ways for organizations to achieve and sustain a competitive edge is by building a high-performance workforce. This is easier said than done. The best performing employees can usually choose the company they work for. In order to attract, hire and retain top people, a company needs to be an "employer of choice", with an earned reputation for being a great place to work.
A highly effective way for any organization to become a highly rated employer of choice is to identify what it will take to become an employer of choice, and then take action to implement the necessary actions. Employee satisfaction surveys/employee engagement surveys, employee retention surveys and exit interview surveys are important tools for determining what needs to be done to become an employer of choice, and then continuously assessing progress on the road toward achieving this important goal.
Current and former employees will tell you what your organization needs to do to become an employer of choice, and they will tell you how well your organization is executing. You just need to ask them using surveys, and take appropriate action based on their feedback.
Some of the "employer of choice" issues that should be included in employee satisfaction surveys, employee engagement surveys and employee retention surveys include:
  • Challenging job that provides a sense of accomplishment
  • Having the tools and information to do the job
  • Understanding how your job fits into and adds value to the organization
  • Having access to and understanding key financial and other organizational performance indicators
  • Career opportunities
  • Training and development opportunities
  • Healthy organizational culture
  • Frequent, honest communication at all levels of the organization
  • Customer focused organization
  • Managers and supervisors that care about employees
  • Attractive, comfortable work environment
  • Clearly stated organizational direction and values based on integrity and ethical behavior
  • Having confidence in and respect for immediate and higher level managers and their leadership performance
  • Competitive compensation and benefits, based in part on the success of the organization
  • Timely, honest and constructive feedback and performance measurement
  • Innovation is encouraged, listened to and taken action on if justified
  • Looking forward to coming to work every day
